Clinical and Microbiological Characteristics of Bacteroides Prosthetic Joint Infections

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of patients with Bacteroides prosthetic joint infection (PJI) have not been well described in the literature. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the outcome of patients with Bacteroides PJI and to review risk factors associated with failure of therapy. Between 1/1969 and 12/2012, 20 episodes of Bacteroides PJI in 17 patients wer...

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of community-acquired Staphylococcus lugdunensis infections in Southern Taiwan.

Most Staphylococcus lugdunensis strains (49/59, 83%) were related to clinical infections, were susceptible to most antimicrobial agents with an overall oxacillin-resistant rate of 5% (3/58), and carried relatively great genetic diversity. Community-acquired infections (41/49, 84%) were dominant, often developed in patients with comorbidity, and had rather benign clinical courses without mortality.

Rapid progression of Staphylococcus lugdunensis mechanical prosthetic valve endocarditis

Figure 1 (A) Initial transesophageal echocardiogram reveals a large vegetation on the atrial aspect of the mechanical mitral valve (arrow). (B) Repeat transesophageal echocardiogram 6 days later demonstrates a significant increase in size of the vegetation with valve obstruction (arrow). Note spontaneous echo contrast in the (C) Photograph of the explanted valve atrial aspect of the annular rin...

Outcome Predictors in Prosthetic Joint Infections--Validation of a risk stratification score for Prosthetic Joint Infections in 120 cases.

Prosthetic joint infections are a major challenge in total joint arthroplasty, especially in times of accumulating drug resistancies. Even though predictive risk classifications are a widely accepted tool to define a suitable treatment protocol a classification is still missing considering the difficulty in treating the -causative pathogen antibiotically. In this study, we present and evaluate ...

Prosthetic joint infections: outcome after treatment in a case series

Introduction Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) are one of the most complication of joint replacement surgery and report a considerable disability and cost. This complication occurs in 0.8-1.9% of knee prostheses (TKA) and 0.3-1.7% of hip replacement (THA) [1]. These percentages may be underestimated because of the ability of some bacteria to grow in community of aggregation on the surface of th...
